2024 is about possibility

Happy 2024!

I LOVE the energy around the new year. I am a geek for reflecting on the year that’s passing and dreaming about all things possible in the year to come. Today I want to talk about YOUR new year - 2024 - and what could be possible for you when you dream big.

Let’s consider the word possibility. To me, it feels exciting, expansive, and unlimited. Maybe because it’s sort of vague. I mean, almost anything’s possible, right? And there’s something both hopeful and low-risk about a possibility. It may happen; it may not happen. There’s not a lot of pressure associated with daydreaming about what’s possible.

And this is good, because if you’re like me, it’s really easy to squash an idea with pressure and stress and heaviness when it feels like a ‘must-do.’ But if I hold something as a possibility, there’s a dreamy, imaginative, creative quality to it.

What’s possible for you in the new year?

And more importantly, what possibilities sound fun and exciting? If you knew that you couldn’t fail and you could easily create whatever you dreamt up, what would you choose?

You may have one or two ideas - at least - coming to mind right now. Let’s milk this a little more.

Imagine yourself doing, having or being what you dream of, and it’s coming fast…within this next year.

Do you see a picture or movie of yourself? What does it feel like as you imagine it? If it feels fun and exciting, you’re on the right track. Awesome!

But if imagining the possibilities feels murky, conflicted, stressful or discouraging, let’s look at why.

What does the word possibility mean to you anyway? If it doesn’t bring up the feeling of excitement, but instead, heavy feelings, you may be attaching other things to the idea. When you imagine something like a new job, how big do you dare to dream? Do you see yourself doing work that you love, that you’re good at, that pays really well, with coworkers who are fun to work with? Or do you immediately start worrying about the competitive application process, or landing a job with too much responsibility?

In other words, do you automatically attach limitation to the idea of possibility?

If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Most of us are trained to be realistic, to anticipate problems, and to be suspicious of anything that seems too positive or exciting. And healthy skepticism has its’ place. But when it comes to dreaming big, being overly skeptical and hyper-vigilant for trouble will really limit your possibilities.

So let’s revisit my earlier question: if anything - truly anything - were possible for you in the next year, what would you choose? Even if it feels a little silly, try it on. You’ll know that you’ve landed on a real possibility when it feels dreamy and exciting, even if your logical mind wants to reject it. Let’s leave your logical mind aside for a moment. Can you tap into the dreamer in you, like you did when you were a little kid?

How fun will it be when you make that change? How fun will it be to be someone who has created that? Imagine yourself in this new life of yours, realizing your dreams. What else looks different? What’s your mood like? Who are the people around you? How excited are you to get out of bed in the morning?

Here’s the thing: most of us dream too small, NOT too big.

It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking ‘but how am I going to do that?’ instead of really fleshing out our vision. It’s easy to become discouraged and set our sights low so we don’t have to risk failing.

I’m asking you to put the limited thinking aside for a while. I’m asking you to bask in the fun of true childlike imagination. I’m asking you to consider that almost anything is possible for you. Allowing yourself to imagine the possibilities sets you in motion toward realizing them.

I’m going to be brave and share some of MY possibilities for 2024. I want to grow my podcast so it reaches at least twice as many people as it does currently. I want to work one-on-one with at least 30 new humans this year. I have just started a community of my present and past clients that will meet monthly for support and to practice our change work together. I want to begin to organize my writings into a book (a lifelong dream!). I want to run 100 miles in the mountains of Colorado and learn that I can do way more than I think I’m capable of (I’m registered for a race in September…!). I want to create more time in the week for connection and togetherness in my relationship with my husband. I want to deepen my meditations and have transcendent mystical experiences. I want to start growing vegetables in our all-season greenhouse this spring and have it up and running by the summer.

Yeah I know…lots of possibilities there. And each one is exciting and invigorating in its own way. Will I realize all of them? Maybe, maybe not. Am I excited to try? YES. Will dreaming like this make for a fun and productive year, even if I don’t realize all of them? HELL, YES.

I’m so excited for you and the possibilities that you are dreaming of for 2024.

I’ll be touching in on possibility as a theme more throughout the upcoming year, so stay tuned. In the meantime, drop me a note and share what possibilities light YOU up this year. I’d love to know.
