So…what do you want?

In the world of change work, it’s common for a coach to ask, ‘If I could wave a magic wand and you could change anything, what would you change?’

Depending on your mood, this question can be exhilarating or terrifying…or anything in between.

You might know exactly what you’d change, and maybe it’s big, like moving across the country or starting a new career. Maybe it’s creative, like writing a book, or learning an instrument or a sport. Or maybe it’s finding a relationship, or ending one.

You might just want a small change. Something general (but significant), like feeling healthier, or waking up earlier, or getting more sleep.

Whatever you want, there’s a reason you do. If you’re answering the question in the way it was intended, your answer is for you, not anyone else. It may not even make any sense to anyone else; that doesn’t matter. It’s for you.

Sometimes it can feel hard to answer the question…maybe you don’t know what you actually want. Maybe you want change but you aren’t sure what that looks like.

It’s OK. You can start small. If you don’t want the job you have now, for instance, what would be more fun? If you don’t like how you feel in your relationship, how would you like to feel instead?

Asking yourself, ‘if I could have this situation any way I could imagine, what would I choose?’…that’s the first part of this exercise.

Here’s the second part: when you imagine what you want, how does it feel? Is it exciting? Inspiring? Can you see and feel yourself doing it or having it?

Or, do feelings of doubt creep in? Does your mind tell you why you can’t have it, or that it’s not right to want it? Maybe you feel like you don’t deserve it, or that it’s a dumb thing to want…whatever. (This is really common, BTW). If you find yourself swamped with negative thoughts about what you want and whether you can have it…

This is the crux of your work.

Wanting something and fully believing we can have it…if we all had that nailed, we’d be easily creating what we want. I’m serious. If you were fully on board with what you want, you’d have it by now.

There’s a juicy invisible part of creating what you want: working with your unconscious mind. You have beliefs about yourself, what you want, and the way the world works, and those beliefs are integral to the process of creation. I’d bet money that most of what gets in the way of us having what we want is our unconscious beliefs. With few exceptions, we put more restrictions on ourselves than anyone else puts on us.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum of imagining what you want next…whether you have a clear vision or it’s still a little murky, your mind is going to tell you why you can’t have it.

That’s the gold. That’s the stuff to pay attention to.

Because changing your unconscious beliefs frees up change to happen in your reality. Another way of saying it: when you change your beliefs, you change your life.

If you’re left with the question, ‘how do I change an unconscious belief?’, keep reading. This is the stuff I love, and it’s what I’m here to unpack.
