Are YOU a ‘hell, yes!’?
Last weekend I was at a friend’s backyard party, meeting random new people. At one point I was asked, ‘so…what do YOU do?’ When I said, ‘I’m a transformational life coach’, this guy knitted his brows and gave me the side eye. I’m used to this reaction. Transformational life coach. Integrative change worker. What does that even mean? And who is it for?
It’s a good thing I love pondering these questions. I keep coming up with new and creative answers. Here are my top answers for what it is that I actually do:
I help people get clear on what they want to change or create. Then I help them go after it.
I help people come home to themselves. So they can drop the bullshit that is NOT who they are.
I help people dismantle the internal criticism that keeps them from knowing their own power.
I like the second question - who is it for? - even better. Lots of people say they want change. But it’s a special group of people who are actually ready and willing to change.
When I encounter someone who is on the fence about change work, I have them answer the following questions:
Do I have a sense of what I want to create, even if I don’t know the details? Can I imagine how it will feel to have it?
Am I willing and eager to make this a top priority? Am I ready to own it?
Am I ready to take an honest look at the parts of me and/or my life that are difficult to see? Could I welcome all of these parts of me and unshame what I haven't wanted to own?
Am I willing to show up for myself and our coaching calls as if my life depended on it?
As much as I love coaching (and I REALLY LOVE coaching), I want to work with people who answer 'hell, yes!' to these questions. Sometimes I’ll encounter someone who’s not quite there yet. That’s not only OK, it’s perfect. It may become a ‘hell yes!’ at some point, or there may be something even better in store for them.
And when it IS a ‘hell, yes!’…
We get to work.
