Dance as if nobody’s watching

This morning I called my Pop on the phone. After exchanging hellos, he said, ‘You’ve been busy! I’ve been watching you dance on Facebook.’

Mortifying, right?

A little background: I’m in the middle of the most amazing training. (And I’ve been in school or in training my whole life, y’all!). I’m undergoing certification from the Ethical Coaching Collective in coaching the unconscious mind. This course, led by entrepreneurial coaching sensation Simone Seol and renowned hypnotherapist and teacher Melissa Tiers, is a thorough schooling in tools and techniques from self-directed neuroplasticity, therapeutic memory reconsolidation and hypnotherapy. As a coach, this is what I’ve been waiting for…a way to help people go deep into their unconscious blocks and beliefs so they can make lasting change at the neurological level. I am already witnessing the game-changing effects on my clients, and I can’t wait for more.

One of the reasons I love Simone is that she advocates being thoroughly yourself - not just in life, but on social media, your website, and wherever you present yourself publicly. Simone is unabashedly direct and unselfconscious in her social media presence. In our second intensive last weekend, she put out a challenge during one of our regular 10-minute dance breaks: make a video of yourself dancing and post it on social media. WTF? Terrifying! But also weirdly intriguing. I not only took her up on this challenge, but I did it twice more the following week because it was so exhilarating. And what’s even cooler is that the enjoyment outweighed any feeling of self-consciousness…people can like it or not, be embarrassed for me or cheer me on. I won’t know either way, ‘cause I’m over here having fun.

Here’s what Simone has to say about her challenge:

“Years ago, a mentor asked me this question: ‘What is the most embarrassing thing you can imagine doing online?’

I answered: ‘Posting a video of myself dancing.’ She said, ‘that’s your homework.’

In that moment I wanted to slap her.

Because I f-ing loathed the idea. And I also knew it would change me.

So I did.

My whole body was shaking and my face was red as I hit post.

And I’ve never been the same since.

I wasn’t always a visibility queen.

Now, people pay me millions of dollars a year to teach THEM how to be visible and take up space.

If I’d never taken up my mentor’s challenge that day, the Simone you see today before you wouldn’t exist.

Take the challenge.

Dance as if nobody’s watching.

And post that shit on social media.

You won’t die.

And you’ll see the magic that happens when you share your unedited joy with the world.”
