A Connection to Place
Happy Wednesday!
The last month has been both chaotic and exciting. In late July, we went under contract for a home in the mountains that we absolutely adore. The home-buying process is harrowing; holding inspections, meeting deadlines, and planning for the move while we both had busy work schedules was challenging. Then upon closing, there was the frantic sprint to get the home ready. Ten days of painting, carpeting, packing up our old place and moving boxes ahead of the U-Haul (yes, we moved ourselves…with the help of some strapping young family members). And then the final moving day, loading, unloading, the thrill of emptying the U-Haul, and the frustration of not knowing where anything is in all of the boxes crowding the house and garage!
Yeah, I’m painting the picture, but all of that is really beside the point.
Our new home has a vibe.
It’s situated in the beautiful mountains that we regularly visit for trail running, hiking, skiing, and even for our mountain pass wedding in 2020. The house sits on just over 5 acres of pristine, mostly flat and usable land (hard to find in this area, where homes are often built on steep slopes). We have a large all-season greenhouse and a young fruit tree orchard protected by a giant elk-proof fence. The house itself has breathtaking views south to Mt. Thorodin. We are surrounded by National Forest and Boulder Open Space, and can access dozens of miles of trails right from our dirt road. We’ll have cold, snowy, windy winters for sure and it’s a longer drive to town, but there’s really nothing to NOT love about this home. We’ve been looking for this for a while, and it checks all of the boxes.
And yet, there’s more.
There’s something special about this place that called to us the moment we stepped onto the property. A peacefulness, a sense of possibility for what is to come. The anticipation of joyful gatherings with family and friends. The vision of a peaceful retreat for our guests and clients from their busy lives. There is something about the land, the trees, the house, the critters in the forest (we know they’re there!) and the white butterflies that flit around the tall fir tree tops. They welcome and embrace us. The relationship feels symbiotic. We are not owners of this special place as much as we are its stewards for a while. We feel its love and we’re returning it every day in small gestures of appreciation.
We feel a connection to this place that is so many things, but especially spiritual.
I’m excited for the transformational change work that I’ll do here with my people, and for the writing and blogging and creating that feels limitless in such a space.
